Who We Are - What We Do

Who We Are

The Friends of the Yorba Linda Public Library is a non-profit 501(C)3 corporation organized for the purpose of cultivating a closer relationship between the library and the community, promoting knowledge of library services and resources, and providing financial and volunteer assistance for special library needs and events. Begun in 1971 by a small but dedicated group of library lovers, our membership had grown to 95 by 1984. Today we are over 700 members strong! Our Board of Directors is elected by the general membership at an annual meeting in January. We have a Book Corner committee which oversees the operation of our used book store and our semi-annual book sales.
The Friends are currently active members of:
  • California Library Association
  • Friends of California Libraries
  • Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce

What We Do

The Friends have made significant contributions toward the purchase of PC workstations and many software programs and online subscription services. We are committed to the role technology plays in enhancing special services to the community. This year we anticipate donating over $50,000 to support library services to children and adults. As our membership has grown, so has our ability to support our library. Starting on a small scale in 1971 with bake sales and an annual booksale, we added a silent auction and small book cart within the library in 1986 and a book sale annex in 1990. In June, 1992, the Friends officially opened their used book store, The Book Corner. Friends' donations have ranged from a yearly Christmas tree and annual support for the Children's Summer Reading Program since 1980, to sponsorship of the Library's 75th Anniversary bash in 1983, and donation of a $10,000 bronze statue entitled "Books Give Us Wings" in 1992, for the reopening of the extensively renovated library. The Friends have hosted many special events at the library, including author programs with Charles Champlin, film critic for The Los Angeles Times, and Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler's List.

The Friends of the Yorba Linda Public Library has been awarded the following recognitions:

  • Good Neighbor Award From Bank of America for Outstanding Community Service - 1997
In June, 1997, the Bank of America selected one public service organization from each city in Orange County to honor for exceptional spirit of service and support for their community. The Friends received a $2,000 donation and an impressive certificate of appreciation presented during a special reception at the Bowers Museum. Bank of America also placed a large advertisement in the local newspaper saluting the Friends.
